Auto-adding Service Queues

I talked this up at the conference as "Coming Soon," and now it's here! For those who weren't there or who have forgotten in the shuffle afterwards: KLAS can now automatically create a corresponding Service Queue when you add specified Media to patron profiles.

This is an addition to the existing options of automatically Reserving a certain title or adding a specified Subscription (such as the library Newsletter) at the time that the Medium Profile is added to a patron's record. The Service Queue will be created using the settings on the patron's Profile.

I particularly recommend this for your Digital Serials medium (DS for most libraries). When subscribing a patron to their first serial, KLAS will require them to have the matching Medium Profile--but it's easy to forget to add the matching Service Queue. Why not save yourself the step?

This was included in 7.8.27, so if you are at the current release of 7.8.28 (or later, if you are reading this sometime in the future), you have access to this feature. To enable it, please contact Customer Support and tell us which media you want to automatically generate a Service Queue.

Some questions we've gotten on this that might interest others:

Q: Is there a charge to set this up?
A: None at all! This is a simple Cross Reference setting. In fact, if a KLAS Admin wants to get it themselves, look for "NewPatMediumAddRecor" in the xRefs.

Q: Can I add this for DB as well?
A: Absolutely! I mentioned DS/Digital Serials above as the "easy sell," but you can set this for any medium that serve exclusively (or at least majority) by Duplication.

Q: If this is enabled, will the queue fill immediately?
A: No. If you have a Serial that is also auto-added for that medium, the retained issue(s) will be queued. But even if the patron already has Preferences, they won't be added to the queue until the Nightly Refill process runs or you use the Fill button on the Service Queue tab.

Q: What if a patron shouldn't get Duplication?
A: If there's an exception where a patron shouldn't get Duplication for some reason, go to the Service Queue tab and use the Functions menu to select Service Queue > Delete/Empty Service Queue. The "Remove" option on that screen will delete the queue and set the patron back to Physical service.
