Identifying Patrons with Nonfunctional Returned Cartridges

Availing myself of the wisdom of the crowd to find out if anyone figured out this mystery.

Situation:
When cartridge returned in the mail does not check in on our Scribes nor can it be read by a computer (with the adapter cable).
Many patrons flip the mailing card around to return their items but not all. In these situations I have not found any way to ascertain who had the cartridge so I can check it in through the Item tab.

What I have tried:
I don't know where the barcode value in KLAS for the individual cartridges come from. If it's tied to anything physical on/in the cartridge then I could pull that. However, it does not match the barcode on the case and I even pried open a cartridge but could find no matching serial numbers on the drive itself.

If folks can't track down the current patron to check it in, what do you do instead? Do you clear all BODs that have been checked out past a certain time?

KLAS tracks the cartridges with the internal Serial Number, but there is also an external barcode on the cartridges.* Unfortunately, those numbers don't match, but we should be able to look up the internal S/N using the external barcode.

Use a phone app to scan the barcode, and send us the info by email, and we'll see what we can do!

*I believe the earlier Perkins blue cartridges may not have an external barcode; if not, there is probably nothing we can do at that point to track them.
