This is a long-standing KLAS feature that will become more important as you move to a Duplication service model.

The Autoselect function in KLAS is great at looking at a patron's preferences and exclusions and finding Titles that match... but as you know, it doesn't have an ounce of common sense; it's only as good as your cataloging.

You can help skew Nightly Autoselect to the "good books" by having more copies of those than you do of specialized, limited-interest titles, and even more by using Turnaround shelves (so it looks first at books that other patrons have recieved, including by request). However, this only works with physical circulation. With duplication service, Titles are either always available, or not available at all.

Enter: No Nightly AutoSelect (NAS). This handy subject can be added to any title to remove it from Autoselect's subject considerations. It can still be sent by Request or even by Author, but will never be sent by Subject (if you have the most standard options in your Nightly configuration).

There is no need to put NAS on Patrons as an exclusion--it's all handled in the Nightly Autoselect programs themselves.

NAS is great for things like "What to Expect when You're Expecting," the dictionary, and holy books like the Bible or Quran. These are all great books to get--if you actively want them. However, if you've just requested health books, bestseller nonfiction, or books on religion... probably not.

So if you're planning to go Duplication on Demand, I highly recommend that you have your Reader Advisors start watching out for these kinds of titles now, and making sure they have the NAS subject heading.

And finally, 7.7's Batch Add/Remove Headings feature means that you can add NAS to a whole query set at once. Have any libraries been making use of NAS in their cataloging? If you have, you can easily pass a list of KLAS IDs to other libraries, for them to quickly apply NAS to those titles as well.

So let us know: Have you been adding NAS to Titles, or do you plan to start? We'd love to hear from you! B)
(And if you're just starting, we'd be happy to help you set up the subject heading and check your nightly settings to make sure it will work as expected!)

Can we just add "No Nightly AutoSelect (NAS)" to our list of subject headings for this to work or do you need to do something special?

Probably better to let us set it up. Nancy tells me that the heading should now be available for you, and Nightly Subject selection will skip NAS titles for both Duplication and Physical patrons. Let us know if you need anything else!
